Mapmygenome, Hyderabad-based molecular diagnostics company, which provides personal genomics and diagnostics, is looking at launching newer tests (products) that would be priced lower for greater adoption.

These would be useful in knowing the genetic predisposition of a certain disorder and in evolving the course of future action, if required, according to Anu Acharya, founder and chief and executive officer of Mapmygenome.

The start-up is backed by Googles’ Rajan Anandan and other investors. It had raised over $one million and is now in the process of expanding to multiple cities, art from upgrading its facilities. “The awareness levels about possibilities of genomics are low. We first want to create awareness. We are expanding to Delhi, Mumbai, Goa and others cities. There is a lot of untapped potential in India. We will look at overseas markets in phases,” she said, adding that it has manpower for research as well as sales.

Mapmygenome currently has about 47 products like the Genomepatri, Sugargene, Cardiomap, Oncomap, Braimap, Myfitgene, SmartSport and others. There are personal genomics products and allow one to understand their genetic makeup. A genetic counsellor would help in correlating family history and life style with their genetic profile and suggest preventive measures. Genomepatri is a comprehensive product that costs about Rs 25,000. The other products are priced Rs 3,000 upwards. It also offers health plans from Rs 900 onwards.

The company offers two kits available for TB diagnostics- Spoligo TB and Smart TB. “More products will be launched and the effort will be to lower the price points wherever possible to make the tests mainstream,” she said, adding that it will help in knowing traits, lifestyle, drug responses, inherited conditions and disease.

It has tied up with multiple hospital and healthcare brands including Apollo, Care Hospitals, Manipal Hospitals, Sunshine and others. The firm has also partnered with healthkar.com and Snapdeal. “A lot of things can be prevented or at least detected in early stages. However, the trend in the usage of our products is positive. We are currently serving a few thousand people. With focus on wellness and preventive medicare, the usage of our tests is bound to increase,” said Acharya.

He cited an instance of SlimGene Ultra, which analyses genetic predisposition to appetite, eating habits, fat storage, fat absorption, metabolism and obesity. It also analyses genes related to diet and fitness genetics and work to achieve weight loss and fitness goals, prevent obesity, control BMI, choose the right diet and choose the best fitness activity.
