Why India Is The Diabetes Capital Of The World?

69.9 million by 2025, and 80 million by 2030. Sounds like promising growth, right?  Not until you know what those numbers signify. The numbers above are a survey estimation of the number of adults living with diabetes in India.

In a joint survey conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research ( ICMR) and the National Centre for Disease Informatics and Research (NCDIR),  the number of diabetic cases in India is projected to be 69.9 million by 2025. Now coming to the most interesting part of the survey, did you know that majority of them remain undiagnosed?

What Does The Survey Tell Us About The Prevalence Of Diabetes In India?

A total of 9,721 adults were surveyed, out of which 904 were found to have diabetes based on their fasting blood glucose(FBG) measurement and self-reported history of diabetes.  Out of these, 414 were aware of their diabetes status, 326 were under treatment for diabetes, and 142 were under control as defined as fasting blood glucose.

The survey's key finding is that lack of awareness is the primary cause of  India's rising number of undiagnosed diabetic cases. Almost half of the people who participated in the survey were unaware of their condition.

So, early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for preventing complications, ensuring longevity, and better quality of life for those who have diabetes and for those who are prone to the condition.

Two Simple Steps To Manage Diabetes

Awareness and prevention are the game changers.

A sedentary lifestyle, imbalance in dietary intake, and lack of physical activities are all risk factors responsible for diabetes. So, a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle can ensure the regulation of insulin levels.

Regular blood tests at least once a year and monitoring the risk factors can help bring down the number of undiagnosed diabetic cases. At Mapmygenome, a team of doctors and scientific experts have curated a Diabetic Profile Test that enables you to diagnose diabetes early. It measures glucose, cholesterol, and triglycerides levels in the blood.

Tapping into your genes is another way to build awareness around preventing diabetes. What can one know from digging into the goldmine of genetic information?

As genes are considered the blueprint of life, understanding them through a genetic test opens up an array of information about your risk for certain conditions like diabetes. Accordingly, it helps you create an action plan for your well-being.

Mapmygenome’s comprehensive wellness assessment through its genomic products like Genomepatri and Cardiomap will give an insight into your genetic predisposition to specific health conditions like diabetes and let you personalise a health plan that suits you the best.

The Genomepatri test report explains how genes have multifold implications on your health. Hence, an accurate explanation of the report is essential. To explain the associated health check-up strategies and appropriate lifestyle modifications, a certified genetic counselor comes into play.

Post a genetic counselling session, the report can effectively be used to alter your lifestyle according to your genetic requirement. Your physician, dietitian, or fitness trainer can help you adapt to that lifestyle by outlining further steps.
